The RUSHES Project – Brunel University
The RUSHES Project has had its sixth meeting on the premises of Queen Mary College, University of London, 17-18 September, 2008. After a very busy summer, the project consortium emphasized the research achievements made in the last three months. It was recognized that appropriate web services for the developed middle-level classifiers had been produced by all the RUSHES partners. In addition, significant progress has been made with regards to all the action points agreed in the previous project meeting. The ECE RUSHES team, led by Prof. Abdul H. Sadka, has made a number of outstanding contributions to the project in the last period. One of the contributions was the successful setup of web services for both manual annotation of video key frames and flatness detection, a great part of which was developed and completed by a new PhD student Mr. Mohammad Rafiq Swash. In the meantime, the Brunel team also presented a well developed dynamic video summarization algorithm, which will also be made available as a web service. The RUSHES Project consortium also attended a social event at the “Dickens Inn” restaurant, Tower Hill, London, situated by the River Thames.

Rafiq Swash was also celebrating getting his HND in computing after becoming one of the course’s highest achievers. And all this despite being the youngest on the course, leaving his family in Afghanistan to come to the UK alone and only speaking broken English. His dedication to succeed even shone through during a stint living in Kensington when he had to make regular tiring one and half hour train journeys each way to get to his course at the Further and Higher Education College.

Computing student is programmed for SUCCESS !
A Havering College computing student described as “Incredibly Gifted“ landed a unique opportunity to redesign a company website after impressing tutors with a string of distinctions for his work.
Rafiq Swash, 18, came to the UK from Afghanistan little over two years ago and has achieved an amazing amount in such short time. Despite only speaking broken English and being the youngest on the HND in Computing Rafiq has established himself as one of the course’s constant high achievers.
His determination to succeed even shone through during a stint living in Kensington when he regularly had to make tiring one and a half hour train journeys each way to get to his course at the Ardleigh Green campus.
The teenager, who also completed a part-time Advanced Visual Basic Course alongside his fulltime one, has passed a total of ten assessments with distinctions.
Rafiq Shows Determination – Aim Higher
Rafiq Swash has recently been given a rare opportunity to show his talents after a job agency based in Romford offered one lucky student the chance to redesign their website, and he was chosen for the task.

I came to Brunel University with an HND in Computing. I was keen to study at a well-established university with a good Engineering background. Now I can proudly say that Brunel has lived up to my expectations. The modules are interesting and cover current areas of study in Computer Systems, and the lecturers and staff are friendly and approachable.
